NMBA Coach Code of Conduct
Coaches are the culture-carriers of NMBA. We recognize and deeply appreciate the time, energy, and commitment our volunteer coaches bring to the field. This Code of Conduct is designed to support coaches in creating a safe, respectful, and development-focused environment for all players. This Code applies to all NMBA coaches, assistant coaches, and bench staff. It outlines expectations for professionalism, discipline, and team culture, and supplements existing NMBA policies, SafeSport guidelines, and BCMBA Rules.
Core Coaching Principles
- Player-Centered Approach: Prioritize physical, emotional, and psychological safety.
- Respectful Communication: Treat players, families, and fellow coaches with professionalism.
- Development Focus: Use every interaction to teach, guide, and support growth.
- Team Culture: Foster accountability and bonding through inclusive, age-appropriate traditions.
Coach-to-Coach Expectations
Coaches are expected to collaborate respectfully, support one another, and resolve disagreements constructively. Undermining, gossip, or public criticism of fellow coaches is unacceptable.
BCMBA Rulebook
NMBA coaches are expected to be familiar with and comply with the BC Minor Baseball Association (BCMBA) Rulebook, which governs conduct, discipline, and gameplay standards across all affiliated associations.
In particular:
- Rule 13 outlines the Code of Conduct for managers, coaches, players, parents, and spectators, including expectations for respectful behaviour, discipline procedures, and SafeSport compliance.
- Rule 13.01H addresses 'unreasonable conduct', which NMBA interprets to include any conduct that undermines player safety or team cohesion.
NMBA coaches are required to read and understand Rule 13 in full and are encouraged to consult the Rulebook when in doubt. - Rule 25 defines FairPlay requirements for various divisions and must be followed where applicable.
Conflict Resolution
If conflict arises within a team or between coaches, the following steps should be taken: (1) attempt respectful resolution through direct conversation, (2) follow the NMBA Dispute Resolution Policy.
Addressing Disruptive Behaviour
Coaches must actively manage poor or disruptive behaviour to maintain a positive team environment. Ignoring repeated issues undermines team standards and player development.
Expectations:
- Team Standards: Clearly communicate expectations at season start.
- Timely Intervention: Respond promptly and consistently.
- Progressive Approach: Use verbal correction, timeout, or lineup adjustment.
- Documentation: Note incidents and inform parents when appropriate.
- Supportive Tone: Discipline should be instructional and restorative.
- FairPlay Alignment: Disciplinary measures must be consistent with BCMBA FairPlay rules where applicable.
Season Start Checklist
Before the season begins, coaches must:
- Publish team rules and expectations. Competitive team coaches are encouraged to develop rules and expectations in collaboration with their players. House coaches will be provided with standard NMBA team rules.
- Hold a parent meeting to outline expectations, goals, and communication protocols.
- Complete required NMBA coach training (SafeSport, NCCP)
